The Supreme Court of New Mexico has approved amendments to the state's MCLE Rules effective May 1, 2011 for the compliance year ending December 31, 2011, and subsequent compliance years.
The annual credit requirement has been changed to 12 credits including 2 Ethics/Professionalism credits. There is no longer a separate professionalism credit requirement. Previously, attorney were required to complete 1 ethics credit and 1 professionalism credit each year. Additionally, up to 2 credits of EP will now be allowed as carryover.
Attorneys have the option of completing board approved courses dealing with legal ethics or professionalism. Attorney online MCLE records will display the new credit requirement as EP.
Seminars dealing with the disciplinary rules or ethical considerations applicable to attorneys receive EP credit. Stress management, client billing, substance abuse awareness and action, quality of life issues and elimination of bias also qualify for the EP credit. All programs must be primarily intended for attorneys, not a general audience.
