Last year, a proposal was submitted which would require Maryland attorneys to complete 10 credits, including 2 professionalism credits each year. The suggested effective date was January 1, 2011.
In November Judge Battaglia told me that the proposal had not yet been brought before the court. Instead, a survey of Maryland attorneys was planned to get more information on what CLE these members were already taking, how they were taking them, etc. Upon completion and review, the proposal would be scheduled for hearings and a vote was likely in the spring of 2011. The suggested effective date would not be put into effect.
The Court has moved forward with this plan. In January, they surveyed members of the Maryland Bar. The results are currently being compiled for review and a hearing date will be set once this is complete.
With approximately 22,100 licensed and active in Maryland, the new rules would impact a large number of attorneys.
