I've had some great conversations with many of my readers regarding the New Jersey MCLE Rules. If nothing else, the rules have allowed me to introduce my blog to a number of new CLE professionals!
The latest question about which providers and attorneys have asked deals with the transitional period that attorneys in Group 2 (Birthdays from July 1 to Dec 31) will experience. As this group reports in odd years, their first reporting date is March of 2011. This means that they must complete their requirement by December 31, 2010.
The rules require attorneys subject to this transitional period to complete half of the regular MCLE requirement - 12 credits, including 2 ethics and professionalism credits.
The question that I have been asked about this period relates to how many alternative verifiable format credits may be taken. For the regular two-year compliance period, an attorney may only recieve 12 credits for this format type. This is 1/2 of the requirement.
I have confirmed with the regulators that only six (6) credits may be claimed for alternative format courses in the transition period - in other words, 1/2 of the requirement for the period.
